A trench was dug eastwards alongside the Methodist Chapel where part of a floor of large tesserae was found in 1875, during the first stage of the construction of a new shopping arcade in 1957. This trench was not deep enough to show archaeological features. (1) It was observed by members of the staff of Dorset County Museum. (2) A grey-brown chalky soil was exposed from which 1st century samian pottery was recovered (3).
