Description
An excavation was carried out by Wessex Archaeology in advance of construction of the construction of a new football stadium for Dorchester Town FC, Weymouth Road. This involved the topsoil stripping of the entire development area and the construction of a redeposited chalk platform for the pitch itself. Apart from the foundation trenches for the stands, little disturbance of archaeological deposits was anticipated.
All archaeological features within the area of the topsoil strip were planned and a sample were excavated in order to determine their nature.
All features exposed were of recent date and included two ‘show rings’. The site was formerly a site for the Dorchester Show, between 1921-1962.
