Description

An archaeological watching brief was maintained by Terrain Archaeology in May 2003, during the laying of a water main along the northern side of Bridport Road on the western edge of Poundbury. The groundworks consisted of the excavation of a continuous pipe trench c. 0.4m wide and c. 1.4m deep, along the north side of Bridport Road, Poundbury. A 0.3 m thick flint gravel deposit was encountered beneath the modern road has been interpreted as the remnants of the Roman approach road to Dorchester from Exeter.
