Description

In March 1997 Wessex Archaeology undertook an archaeological field evaluation of three fields between the Bridport Road and Poundbury Road, Dorchester, proposed for development. Forty machine-excavated trenches, plus additional contingency trenches, were investigated. Trench 37 was excavated to a maximum depth of 1.05m, near the north-east corner of the site. It was 'L' shaped in plan, extended to a total area of 96 square metres. A single NNE-SSW aligned ditch (1.2m wide, 0.75m deep, exposed for 7.5m) continued the alignment of ditches observed in trenches 22, 34 & 35. It contained a large amount of Early to Late Bronze Age pottery, possibly indicative of settlement in the vicinity.
