Description

In March 1997 Wessex Archaeology undertook an archaeological field evaluation of three fields between the Bridport Road and Poundbury Road, Dorchester, proposed for development. Forty machine-excavated trenches, plus additional contingency trenches, were investigated. Trench 12 measured 30m by 1.6m and was excavated to a maximum depth of 0.5m. It was aligned E-W, in the central part of the site. It contained the possible remnant of a ploughed out lynchet. This feature was 15m wide and comprised a deposit of dark yellowish-brown clay silt, aligned N-S between exposures of chalk bedrock. It contained a single small sherd of post-medieval pottery.
