Description
Wessex Archaeology undertook an archaeological excavation on land to the west of Poundbury Farm, Dorchester, Dorset in August 2001, part of the proposed Phase II Poundbury development. Three trenches were excavated, targeting archaeological remains discovered during an earlier phase of archaeological evaluation.
Trench 2 measured 12m x 12m and was located over a Bronze Age pit revealed in Evaluation Trench 8, in order to determine whether the pit was part of a wider distribution of features. No archaeologically significant features were encountered other than the previously investigated pit. Several sherds of Late Bronze Age or Early Iron Age pottery were recovered from cleaning over the fill of the previously unexcavated portion of the pit, but no further excavation was undertaken.
