Description

Wessex Archaeology undertook an archaeological excavation on land to the west of Poundbury Farm, Dorchester, Dorset in August 2001, part of the proposed Phase II Poundbury development. Three trenches were excavated, targeting archaeological remains discovered during an earlier phase of archaeological evaluation. Trench 1 was a 15m by 15m trench excavated to further investigate the remains of a ring gully, possibly the remains of a round house, initially exposed in evaluation trench 6 It did not reveal evidence for a round-house, rather two terminating gullies winding on a roughly NW-SE alignment were found, probably associated with the field systems seen in the area. Both gullies contained struck flint in their fills and one contained some fragments of Middle Bronze Age pottery.
