Description

Birmingham University Field Archaeology Unit undertook a short excavation in November 1989 prior to the development of the area adjacent to 9 Bridport Road, Dorchester for a new County Record Office (now Dorset History Centre). Two trenches were excavated to the northwest and northeast of the existing building at 9 Bridport Road. Considerable disturbance had taken place on the present site during the late 19th century for the construction of an army barrack block. Two phases of activity associated with the construction of the barrack block were found. Earlier activity was represented by a single late Roman ditch.
