Description
ASI Archaeologists and Historic Buildings Consultants conducted a watching brief in the grounds of the former St Genevieve's Convent School, off South Walks, Dorchester (now Sunninghill Preparatory School), during groundworks associated with the refurbishment of York House (now the Holy Trinity Parish Centre). The groundworks took place over a two week period in April 1998, and comprised excavations connected to the construction of a perforated hardstanding for vehicles adjacent to the tennis courts (excavated to a depth of 0.3m below ground level), and upgraded sewer connections (excavated to a depth of 0.8m below ground level), principally along the eastern side of the building.
Observations suggest that the site, situated outside the main areas of Roman and medieval settled occupation, has been subject to prolonged agricultural attrition. No archaeological deposits were revealed.
