Description

Wessex Archaeology carried out an archaeological evaluation of land within the grounds of St Genevieve's Convent, South Walks, Dorchester. This comprised a combination of both geophysical and auger surveys, and excavation of 8 machine cut trial trenches. Transect 10 was one of three auger transects, comprising a total of 29 points, generally spaced between 2m and 5m apart, in the northern portion of the site. Auger Transect 10 ran from the northern boundary of the site for 6m in a SE direction. It was specifically located to examine the northernmost limit of the site in the only area free from dense undergrowth and trees. It revealed the southern edge of the middle ditch of the Roman Town defences.
