Description

Exeter Archaeology undertook an archaeological evaluation excavation during January 2001 at Channon’s Garage, High East Street, Dorchester, in advance of redevelopment for mixed residential and retail use. Seven trenches were excavated by machine. Trench 2 measured 4.5m x 1.5m in plan and was aligned approximately NE-SW, near the NW corner of the development area. It was excavated to a depth of 2m onto natural chalk. The upper 0.9m of deposits, including a pit, were post-medieval in date. Below this, a ditch containing exclusively Romano-British artefacts, and two pits (one earlier and one later than the ditch) were tentatively dated to the Romano-British period. These intercutting features cut the natural subsoil.
