Description

AC archaeology undertook an evaluation of the grounds of Heathcote House, Icen Way, Dorchester in August 1991. Two trenches were excavated. These revealed a broad trend of soil accumulation from southeast to northwest. One possible Roman feature was revealed together with a possible medieval feature. Most of the layers and features were 19th century in date. Trench 1 was 20m long, 1m wide, aligned NW-SE and located at the east end of the development site. The depth of overburden above the natural chalk varied from 0.33-0.75m. Features included a post-medieval 'dumbell-shaped' pit, a number of modern rubbish pits, a post-hole of uncertain date and a horse skeleton of probable 19th century date or later within the overburden.
