Description

An archaeological field evaluation of former playing fields and land adjacent to the former Hardye’s School, Dorchester was conducted by AC archaeology during September and October 1996, in advance of development of the site for housing. A total of 14 machine-excavated trenches were dug, comprising an approximate 2.7% sample of the 7.88 ha of proposed development. Trench 12 was aligned N-S, 25m long and situated immedately SE of the ploughed out barrow at the north end of the site. It contained the continuation of a pair of concentric curving ditches excavated in Trench 2 and associated with the barrow. The ditches were revealed in plan but remained unexcavated in Trench 12. A further linear feature of uncertain date was seen at the south end of the trench.
