Description

During topsoil stripping in advance of the By-pass construction in summer 1987, a watching brief was undertaken by Wessex Archaeology across the area of the former Fordington open fields, between the excavations at Middle Farm and Maiden Castle Road. Previous evaluation excavation in this area had not revealed much significant archaeological activity, only a number of tree hollows, a possible Roman corndrying oven and two probable medieval or post-medieval ditches. The watching brief confirmed the low level of archaeological activity. Further parts of two ditches found during the evaluation were exposed and traces of two other ditches were found.
