Description

Excavations by H S L Dewar in 1960 confirmed this as the site of a substantial Roman building cleared by E Cunnington and F A H Vinon in 1891. Dewar's small-scale excavations revealed a furnace flue, three flint steps and two fragments of walling. Finds included two reused voussoirs of Ham Hill stone, slate and tile roofing materials, hypocaust tiles, tesserae, painted wall plaster, and window glass, while pottery and coins suggest occupation in the 2nd to 4th centuries AD. An inhumation burial was recorded nearby. Iron Age sherds were also found.
