Description

Members of the Shaftesbury and District Archaeological Group carried out a small excavation to investigate an area where large pieces of stone (greensand) had been observed during construction of a driveway, adjacent to the garden wall on the south side of the house. A curved section of wall was discovered, approximately 2m long and running approximately NE-SW. The wall was approximately 50cm wide and the SW end curved to the south, and disappeared under the garden wall. At the NW end, the wall pointed towards Haimes Lane at a right angle. Both sides of the wall were excavated to a depth of 75cm. Inside the curve, 'natural' was found at a depth of 60cm. Garden topsoil continued on the outer side of the curve. Some pot sherds and clay pipes of probable eighteenth-century date were found.
