Description
The Shaftesbury and District Archaeological Group carried out an excavation before construction of a garage and concrete area approximately 18m from the Abbey Park Wall. A trench was dug in the approximate centre of the garage. It measured 2 metres by 1 metre, and a maximum of 1.6m deep at its northern end, owing to the slope of the garden [1][2].
A probable soakaway of pot sherds and shale tile and a layer of greensand stones were recorded, and thought likely to be contemporary by the excavators. The pottery suggested a thirteenth century date for the soakaway. The SDAG report states that a photographic record was made, but its present whereabouts are not known [1].
