Description
An earthwork survey and archaeological monitoring prior to and during works associated with a flood alleviation scheme. The field affected by the scheme is located at the confluence of the River Hooke and River Frome and contains evidence for an undated water-management system, as well as structures associated with World War 2 defences. These latter features lay outside the area of groundworks.
Subsequent archaeological monitoring within an area 18m wide and 220m long revealed that those features that were affected were only present within the topsoil and did not survive as sub-surface features. Only modern finds were present in the topsoil.
