Description
Dr Norman Davey recorded a Mesolithic site exposed by road straightening works at Ulwell in July 1931. He discovered two small pits (A-B) 18 inches wide from which he recovered about 30 flints from pit A and 70 from pit B.
Subsequently, several months later, J B Calkin revisited the site and investigated it further. Pit A was found to be much larger and wider, but only a very small part of pit B survived. Another smaller pit was found between the other two pits and which contained quantities of cockle, winkle and limpet shell, but no flint. In all over 200 flints were recovered, some burnt, together with a few slabs of sandstone.
The flint assemblage included two microliths, a microburin, a scraper, a serrated blade, together with some flakes and cores. (1)
