Description
In 1963, a schoolboy found some Samian and other Roman pottery in sewage trenches dug for a new housing estate in 1963. The site was investigated by Norman Field who discovered the Roman material was contained within a hollow, which he suggested was an old clay pit. The hollow was filled with a layer of brown charcoal-flecked soil below a band of dark soil with charcoal and clay lumps which contained the Roman material, which was sealed in turn by a layer of dark soil and topsoil. The pottery included samian, cream ware (flagon?), amphora, coarse wares and briquetage. (1)
The material may represent occupation debris and remnants from a saltworking site in the vicinity. (2)
