Description

The complete excavation of a round barrow on Canford Heath was undertaken by Paul Ashbee on behalf of the Minstry of Works over a three week period in 1951. The mound was excavated in quadrants and removed, and the underlying buried soil excavated. <2> The excavation revealed traces of a trench and stake holes which may represent a pre-barrow phase. A central pit did not contain any surviving human remains and the mound was comprised of earth and gravel.
