Description

CHESELBOURNE SY 70 SE 2/47 The Thatched House - II Former farmhouse, now private dwelling. Early C17, with C18 rebuilding at east end, and barn converted into living quarters at west end. Banded flint and brick walls, and some cob. Thatch roof, half-hipped to west and gabled to east. Brick stacks on ridge and at east gable. 1½ storeys. 4 windows, 2-light wood casements with glazing bars, wood cills, C20. Front door at the original centre, panelled and glazed, C20. Interior: central hall, now leading to staircase. Left room, open fireplace has straight-chamfered oak jambs with stepped stops and mitred lintel with some moulding continued, C17. Brick bread oven in left jamb. Further bread oven in rear of fireplace, now broken and blocked. Ceiling beam, straight-chamfered. Fireplace in right room with brick jambs and rough wood lintel, C18. Flagstone floors. Upstairs room at left end, has small brick fireplace with wood lintel. Roof construction, substantially C17 timbers with principals resting directly onto wall-head.
