Description

ST 6601 CERNE ABBAS LONG STREET, (south side) 11/97 Nos. 8, 10 and 12 GV II Attached row of Cottages. Late C19. knapped flint and chalk- block walls in chequer-work, on an ashlar plinth. Haul stone quoins. Brick west gable-end wall. Asbestos slate roofs with cross wing at east end, and 4 distinctive hipped dormer roofs to front. Rendered stacks, cluster of 4 on right hand ridge; ridge right of centre; left end wall near eaves. 1½ storeys. 4 windows, east end has 2 coupled stone mullions, transomed, with segmental heads and moulded label over. Remainder are 3-light, 3-light, 2-light with same ovolo-moulded mullions and segmental heads with labels (to ground). Good cast-iron casements with foliated bosses at the glazing-bar intersections. Doors: Nos. 8 and 10, share same entrance at right front, no outer door, 2 C20 inner doors in lobby. No. 12, at left centre, plank door with ornamental strap-hinges and weather- board, segmental top light over, C19. An important group of cottages for design and use of chequer-work.
