HIGHER CHEAP STREET 1. 1625 (East Side) The George Hotel
ST 6316 1/70 28.11.50. II GV 2.
2 storey frontage set back. Said to be of early C16 date and to have formed part of Becket's Chapel or Hospital. Passage through to George Street has moulded stone 4-centred arch. Apart from this the front is much altered. New roughcast. Four widely spaced altered sash windows to 1st floor. Wood casements and sash windows, including three small bays, below. Flat painted architrave and altered hood to main doorway. Roof has plaintiles at front and back except over passageway at south end which has a covering of stone slates. Moulded beams internally; 4-centred fireplace; to the side, a spice cupboard with ventilator holes.
Forms a group with Nos 1 to 15 (odd) Cheap Street.
