Description

HIGH WEST STREET 1. 5191 (North Side) No 52 SY 6990 7/74 8.5.50. II GV 2. Early C18. Brown brick. 3 storeys. 5 ranges of cased sashes. Deep stone strings at 1st and 2nd floor levels and below parapet break forward above centre of windows. Sash windows without glazing bars have stone lintels with projecting key blocks. Doorway has good early C18 hood on brackets enriched with mask and foliage carving. Parapet has moulded stone coping swept up at angles and raised in centre in semi- circular shape. Modern door. Modern windows on ground floor. Interior. Stone-flagged hall, 1 side panelled. Staircase is a cruder version of (eg) Colliton House, viz: balusters alternately polygonal and vase-shaped, handrail ramped to square newels, fielded panelling to dado height. Nos 48 to 65A (consec)including the Shire Hall, Holy Trinity Church, the Museum, St. Peter's Church and monument to William Barnes in churchyard immediately south of West Tower form a group.
