Description
EDWARD ROAD 1. 5191
Church of St Mary West Fordington SY 6890 7/171 B
2. 1910-2. Architect C E Ponting. Hammer dressed stone, with ashlar dressings. Windows with late C19 variant of Perpendicular tracery, some C16 French of possibly even Scotch influence. Porch with huge polygonal buttresses evidently intended as base for tower, elaborately carved aedicute over door. Interior has wooden barrel-vaulted roof over nave arcade of 4 depressed arches. That of west bay of north arcade is particularly wide to correspond with tower opposite and the depressed arch is thus only a relieving arch over 2 4-centred pointed arches with a slender pier carrying a very elaborate niche. Very low aisles. South east chapel separated from chancel by narrow rib-vaulted passage. Ogee-arched sedilia in chancel. Elaborate carved wooden chancel screen. Neo-Platersque pulpit and sounding board.
