Description

SZ 08 NW STUDLAND BROWNSEA ISLAND 1/61 Church of Saint Mary - II* Anglican Parish Church. Built 1854. Architect - Blanchard (Poole Herald). Coursed rubble stone walls, slate roofs with coped gables and parapets - these battlemented on nave and panelled on chancel. Nave, chancel with vestry on north, south porch, west tower with mausoleum on south. Tower of 3 stages, with battlemented parapet and diagonal buttresses. Carved gargoyles to parapet. Moulded string courses to each stage. Octagonal stair turret on north. In west wall, a 3-light window with geometrical tracery in lowest stage. 2-light traceried windows to belfry - trefoiled lancets to centre stage. Mausoleum, south of tower, has flat roof with battlemented parapet and a 4-light rectangular window with ogee-headed lights. South porch has diagonal buttresses and pointed arched doorway. In south wall of nave, west of porch, a trefoiled lancet window. East of porch, two 2-light windows with plate tracery. Wall buttressed between windows. Diagonal buttresses to chancel. South wall has a pair of trefoiled lancets. East window of 4 lights with geometrical tracery. Vestry, north of chancel, has pair of lancet windows. North wall of nave has three 2-light windows with plate tracery. Wall buttressed between windows. Inner doorway to porch has pointed arch with continuous mouldings. Tower base has carved oak panelling and fireplace surround with canopy, flanked by carved figures, C16 - imported. C17 painting over fireplace. Panelled oak ceiling, C16 - from Crosby Hall, London (RCHM). Also, in tower marble figure of angel. Tower screen from Crosby Hall (RCHM). Similar screen to mausoleum. This has marble effigy of Charles Van Raalte c1901. Nave has arch-braced collar beam roof with interlacing wind braces. Oak pews and pulpit C19. Pointed waggon roof to chancel. Chancel walls with carved C16 panelling, some from Crosby Hall (RCHM). Stone and marble altar. Marble floor to sanctuary. 2 C17 carved panels on north wall of nave.
