Description

SY 88 NE EAST HOLME 5/114 Holme Priory II Large detacehd house. Late C16-early C17 origin - the original house now the kitchen. Enlarged c1770 and c1800 and partly remodelled c1840 by successive members of the Bond family. Walls of original building of ironstone and limestone rubble-part plastered. Roof pantiled, part stone slated, brick stacks. Two storeys and attics. Single-storey projecting lean-to, with hipped tiled roof. Part-glazed door. Ground floor has one 3-light mullioned window with arched lights. First floor has one casement window and one horizontally sliding sash, both with glazing bars. Attic has one modern dormer. East of this block, a C19 range, of brick, with tiled roof with stone eaves courses. West of the original block, a brick extension with pyramidal slate roof, of three storeys and attics. Probably C18 but may incorporate earlier work. Ground floor has a 3-light timber window with lead lights. Blocked windows on first and second floors. Pedimented dormer in attic. Remains of hoist at second floor level. The main C18 building has rendered walls and hipped slate roof; rendered stacks. Two storeys and attics. Main south elevation has parapet above moulded cornice. Rusticated quoins, plat band at first floor level. Central porch, C19, rendered, with rusticated quoins; doorway with moulded surround and keystone; balustraded parapet; part-glazed door. Ground floor has four double-hung sash window with moulded surrounds. First floor has four similar windows - with glazing bars, and central round-headed window. Internally, kitchen has large fireplace - now blocked, with chamfered lintel. Dining room west of this has deep chamfered ceiling beams. In the C18 wings, some rooms have carved C18 fireplace surrounds and plaster cornices - other details C19. Staircase - appears renewed in C19, has cut string, twisted balusters and carved spandril brackets. Brick garden walls attached to house, and enclosing walled garden to west. RCHM Monument 2.
