Description
LYTCHETT MINSTER SY 99 SE 4/07 South Lytchett Manor (Lytchett Middle School) - II Country house, now used as school. Early C19 origin, largely remodelled c.1904. Architect W D Caroe. Ham Stone ashlar walls, hipped slate roofs with deep modillion eaves cornices. Stone stacks in form of Tuscan columns. In Edwardian Baroque style. 2 storeys and attics. Entrance front asymmetrical, - centre block with flanking wings. Centre block has enclosed pedimented portico to ground floor (original entrance). Round-headed door replaced by a window, flanked by Tuscan columns and solid piers. On each side of this a Venetian window with glazing bars. On first floor, a central recessed niche with curved pediment supported on paired Ionic columns and surmounted by a carved owl. Double-hung sash windows on first floor - tripartite window in attic. On each side of this a double-hung sash window with bowed apron. Moulded string course at first floor. Flat-roofed dormers in attic flanking central feature. North wing of 2 storeys with balustraded parapet. Venetian window on ground floor, - cross pattern window on first floor. North of this the kitchen wing - rough cast walls and slate roof. South wing of 2 storeys and attic. C20 glazed entrance doors. Double-hung sash window on first floor - pedimented dormer in attic. South of this a projecting single-storeyed wing with balustraded parapet. Central pediment on paired Tuscan pilasters and round-headed window. Cupola in centre of roof. Garden front has central block of 2 storeys and attics. 5-bay loggia on ground floor with rusticated arches and Tuscan pilasters. 5 double-hung sash windows on first floor with broken pediments. 3 pedimented dormers in attic. Flanking wings single-storeyed with balustraded parapets. Each have 3 round-headed windows separated by Tuscan pilasters. Internally, original entrance hall aisled - Tuscan columns. Painted glass dome. Inner hall vaulted. Main hall galleried. Headmaster's room has plaster ceiling in Cl6 style and frieze modelled on Parthenon. Other main ground floor rooms have carved panelling and chimney pieces. C20 rear extensions - these not listable. See Pevsner "Buildings of England, Dorset." Lytchett Minster.
