Description
SY 88NE 5/392 WOOL BINDON LANE 20.11.59 (North Side)
Bindon Mill and Mill House. Formerly listed as "Bindon Mill House"
II
Probably the monastic mill of Bindon Abbey. Medieval origin, largely reconstructed C18. House with attached mill. House has brick and stone walls, tiled roof, brick stacks. Two storeys. Plan consists of two parallel ranges with separate pitched roofs and central valley gutter. Rear range may have originated as a lower lean-to. Roof of front range has been raised. Stone lean-to at rear with slate roof. Of the front range, the west end (the present parlour block) appears a later addition. Two entrance doors. That at east end has a panelled door in brick porch with slate roof. That at west end has glazed door in timber porch with tiled lean-to roof. (House may once have been divided). Ground floor has two double-hung sash windows with glazing bars. First floor has similar windows. Also, two storeyed inserted bay window with double-hung sashes and dentil cornice. Evidence of former door at west end of facade, and blocked window above this. Built-up pointed arch, possibly medieval, in east gable wall. Internally, kitchen, at east end, has large open fireplace, partly built up, and two exposed ceiling beams. Centre room has fireplace in rear wall, and exposed chamfered ceiling beams. West room (parlour) has Regency character, with late C18 fireplace etc. Dairy and other service rooms in rear range. Earlier roof trusses, with cambered collar beams, survive below later roof structure - these possibly C17. Mill has stone walls, and roof part tiled, part slated, part stone slated. Two storeys. Timber doors and casement windows. Internally, some machinery survives. Stable block east of the Mill - probably C18, has stone walls with brick dressings, end tiled roof. Timber doors and windows. Timber bridge and sluices at rear (north) of mill - probably later C18-C19. RCHM Monument 3A.
