Description

SY 8084, SY 8184, SY 8185, SY 8085 18/360 WINFRITH NEWBURGH HIGH STREET 20.11.59 (North-West Side) Winfrith House II* House. C18 origin, enlarged - probably in C19. Brick walls, with parapet on front elevation only, brick stacks. Two storeys and attics. Original house had a symmetrical plan, two rooms deep and two wide, with a central entrance and stair. This extended to south by an additional bay, the doorway being re-sited further south and the original entrance all incorporated in the north room. Later kitchen wing on north, of one storey and attics. Main facade now has raised panel door with fanlight in a semi-circular brick arch, set in a stone portico with Tuscan columns and entablature. Oval windows each side of this. North of the doorway, ground floor has two double-hung sash windows with glazing bars. South of the doorway a canted bay window with double-hung sashes with glazing bars. First floor has five double-hung sash windows with glazing bars. Moulded stone cornice at base of parapet. Stone plinth, and stone band course at first floor level on original section only. Northern kitchen block has double-hung sash window and a dormer-type extension above the lean-to roof. At south end of house, a modern single-storey extension with flat roof containing a loggia and a garage. Internally, north front ground floor room has a late C18 moulded plaster cornice and dado, and contemporary hob grate, all in "Adam" style. Main rear ground floor room has re-used mid-C18 panelling with raised panels, cornice with dentils and egg and tongue ornament, and dado and skirting with carved ornament. Door has eared architrave with carved consoles. "Secret" door in north wall. Good fireplace surround and overmantel with carved console "supporters". Two later bay windows in rear wall, with double-hung sashes with glazing bars. Late C18 cut string stair with square balusters, wreathed handrail and carved spandril brackets. RCHM Monument 4.
