Description

SY 8486 19/409 WOOL CHURCH LANE 20.11.59 (South-West Side) Parish Church of the Holy Rood II* Parish church. C13 origin, enlarged in C15. Enlarged again and part rebuilt in C19. Stone walls, roofs part tiled, part lead-covered. Parapets to gables, with stone copings. Nave, north and south aisles of four bays, chancel with vestry on north, north porch, west tower. Tower, C15, of three states, has battlemented parapet, and semi-octagonal stair turret on south. Top stage has 2-light windows with lattice filling. Centre stage has slit window on south. Lowest stage has 3-light west window with Perpendicular tracery. South aisle, C19, has battlemented parapet. Three reset C15 square-headed 3-light windows, and doorway of similar date with depressed 4-centred arch. Chancel, C19, has two 2-light windows in south wall and a 3-light east window, all in C15 style. 'North aisle, C15, has parapet and added C19 buttresses. One 2-light and one 3-light window. Porch rebuilt C19 but incorporates reset C15 outer arch. Inner arch has depressed 4-centred head. Internally, two centre bays of north arcade are C13 with circular piers and moulded caps. West bay C15, in similar style. East bay C19. South arcade is C19, copying the north arcade. Chancel rebuilt in C19. Chancel arch, late C14, divided into three arched sections, forming a stone "screen". All roofs C19, of pine, of hammer-beam form in chancel, arch-braced scissor trusses in nave. Most fittings C19, font, C15, built against pier of north arcade. Listing NGR: SY8475086463
