8/52 Parish Church of Saint Nicholas 20-11-50 GV I
Anglican Parish Church. Saxon origin, altered and part rebuilt in Cll and C12. Porch added C17, building restored C18 and c1880. Rubble stone walls with ashlar dressings and some ashlar facing. Stone slate roofs. Nave, chancel under central tower, sanctuary, south porch. Porch has coped gable and doorway with flat lintol. South wall of nave has C12 corbel table with carved heads. 2 round-headed C18 windows. Tower of 3 stages - top stage reduced in height, with lead saddle-back roof with coped gables. Shallow buttresses. Round-headed C18 window in lowest stage. Rectangular louvred openings to belfry. South wall of sanctuary has a low rectangular window and east of this a C12 window in panel with moulded surround. East window of triple lancets - centre light cusped. Small C12 window above this. North wall of sanctuary has a C12 window as in south wall, and door to loft. North wall of tower has shallow buttresses and C12 window in lowest stage. North wall of nave has C12 door with flat lintol and relieving arch. 2 C12 windows and corbel table as on south wall. Inner door to porch, C12, has semi-circular arch, shafts with scalloped caps. Pair of C18 panelled oak doors. Internal walls scraped. Flagstone floor. Sanctuary has quadripartite vault with moulded ribs on shafts, some with billet moulded caps. Western arch of 3 orders, the inner order and west face of outer order moulded - shallow chevron ornament. Shafts with scalloped caps. Chancel, under tower, has similar vault, on shafts with caps of varying designs. Western arch stilted, of 2 orders, the inner orders and west face of outer orders moulded. Shafts with scalloped caps. Abaci on each side continued to outer walls as string course. Nave roof of oak c1930. Stone corbel west of south door. Plain C12 circular font. C19 west gallery. Above this 2 C18 hatchments. On north wall of nave - fragment of C12 painting. Painted C18 text over chancel arch. C16 table tomb on north wall of sanctuary, also an early C19 wall tablet. C18 marble tablet on south wall of nave. Pews, pulpit and lectern Cl9. Good example of small Norman Church - largely unaltered. RCHM Monument 1. (Dorset Vol II).
