DURLSTON HEAD 1. 5190 The Globe to south-east of Durlston Head Castle
SZ 07 NW 2/49 II GV
2. Erected 1891. Stone globe about 10 ft in radius surrounded by a circle of cast iron railings. At the base is a tablet recording distances between stars and planets. To the rear are a series of panels with apposite quotations from the Bible, Shakespeare, the Aeneid and Tennyson and further tables of distances. Around the Globe are 11 posts inscribed "1815 St Martin" or "St Giles and Bloomsbury" which George Burt had acquired during his building ventures in London. Included for group value. This is how the Victorians saw the world and the universe.
