No.2 The Helmsman Public House

Shown on OS map as King's Arms Hotel. Public house. Early C19, altered late C19. Painted brick with slate hipped roof. Single-depth plan. 2 storeys and attic; 7-window range. A corner site with left-hand 2-window curved end beneath a curved roof, and a half-hipped left-hand gable. Left-hand end doorway has an architrave, pediment and panelled door, and a vehicle doorway one bay from the right-hand end. Flat brick arches over 6/6-pane and 3/9-pane sashes, with blind first-floor windows in the 4th, 7th & 8th bays from the right; a partial ground-floor Venetian window in the curved end with a blocked fanlight, flanked by horned 3/6-pane sashes. Segmental arches over 2-light casement to right and horned 2/2-pane sash; late C19 paired round-arched ground-floor windows to the left with moulded archivolts, keys and stops to plate-glass sashes. The right-hand gable has a first-floor 8/12-pane sash. INTERIOR altered on the ground floor with mid C20 public house interior. Listed for group value and for its position where the High Street meets the Quay.
