House. 1938-9. By Oliver Hill. For Dudley Shaw Ashton. Painted concrete with a flat roof. International Modern style. 2 storeys; 6-window garden range. Entrance front has a central 3-storey section with shallow curved sides, coped parapets, a thin canopy over the door, and diagonal stair portholes above; wide, narrow windows to the right have metal vertical glazing bars, 9 panes to the ground floor and 4 to the first floor. Garden front has a wide deeply recessed section to the centre and right with 4 full-height piloti and first-floor balcony. Fully-glazed ground floor, and first-floor windows with metal glazing bars. Right-hand curved stair to the roof and left-hand service range with 5-light ground-floor and 8-light first-floor windows. Railings to balcony and roof. INTERIOR: central hall has a projection screen and small portholes from the cloakroom beside the doorway for film projection; curved stair to the entrance front, glazed doors to E drawing room, rear corridor to W service end. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: attached curved screen wall to the NW end. HISTORICAL NOTE: the owner had discussions with Mendelsohn, Lubetkin and Wells Coates before choosing Hill. The construction of the house was made into an award-winning film which made the career of the owner, hence the projection room and screen. The original fittings included carpets by Marion Dorn and furniture by Betty Joel. A complete and little-altered house in an advanced style, one of the finest Modern Movement buildings by one of the most notable architects of the inter-war period.
