SU 01 SE EDMONDSHAM VILLAGE STREET (north side)
2/21 Edmonsham House 18.3.55 GV II*
Country house, dated 1589 with C18 south east and north west wings and extensive remodelling and alteration in the C19. Rendered brickwork with ashlar dressings and tiled roofs. Rendered stacks variously disposed. South west facade: symmetrical; 3 storeys; inner 5 bays, C16, outer C18. Bays 1, 3 and 5 of C16 part projecting, C18 wings also project. Weathered string courses. 3 and 5 light stone mullioned and mullioned and transomed windows to C16 range. Projecting bays have shaped gables with vase finials. C18 wings have sashes with glazing bars in ashlar architraves, those to the first floor having round heads with keystones and imposts. Blind round headed openings above. Semi-circular gables with vase finials. Central porch has round headed arch with panelled archivolt and jambs with moulded capitals. C18 north west front is of 2 storeys, 7 bays, symmetrical. 2:3:2 central pavilion pedimented and defined by rusticated, ashlar quoins. 9-pane sashes above, 12-pane sashes below. Flat brick arches with stone keystones. Central doorway has rusticated architrave which is continued around the window above. Part glazed door. Lunette window in pediment.
Interior features (R.C.H.M.): C17 staircase with oak newel posts having ball finials, plain strings, moulded handrails and turned balusters; subsidiary C17 staircase with moulded close string and flat balusters; other features C19.
