Description
CRANBORNE SU 01 SE HOLWELL
7/23 Holwell House
GV II
Detached house. C15 with C17, C18, C19 and C20 alterations and additions. Original range of irregularly bonded brickwork with chamfered plinth and ashlar quoins. Later work in Flemish-bond brickwork, partially rendered. Tiled roof, half-hipped to the rear; brick stacks. South front: 2 storeys, 3 window range. C20 2-light casements with glazing bars. Central C20 glazed door. Former cross-passage entered through C20 door in re-entrant angle between front and rear ranges.
Internal features: a number of early doorways with heavy timber frames; C18 or early C19 panelled doors with original hinges; deep stop-chamfered ceiling beams; C18 wing has a cast iron fireplace, probably early C19; the south room of the early range retains an original chamfered, arch braced collar beam truss roof with curved windbracing to the purlins and exhibiting traces of smoke-blackening; the roof to the north end of the original range has later collar trusses, reusing earlier timbers; the central section of the roof is not visible.
Recent C20 additions are in keeping with the rest of the house. (RCHM, Dorset, vol. V, p.14-15, no.30.)
