Description
COLEHILL SU 00 SW CRANBORNE ROAD 5/2 Wilksworth Farmhouse 18.3.55 - II* Farmhouse, c1500, c1600, c1700, with early and mid Cl9 minor extensions. Walls mainly of brickwork in English, English Garden Wall and Flemish bonds, with cambered openings: areas of rubble stonework of mixed brown and grey 'heathstone'. Tile roof, slate above outshots and rear pentice. A late-medieval hall (retaining an arch-braced collar beam truss of c1500), with two storeyed cross wing (incorporating a massive fireplace), and rear extensions of c1600, raised in the early C19. The south east front is of two storeys, and contains four gables (diminishing eastwards); 2:1:1:0 windows. The brickwork is of Flemish and English bonds, with stonework to the lower part of the west side. The two west side gables are later forward projections from the tall hipped roof (above the original hall), and the remaining part of the roof has a lower ridge, the small gables at the east end masking the thickness of the chimney. Early C19 sashes in exposed frames. Plain doorway with 6-panelled (2 top glazed) door. The irregular rear elevation has a central gable (the earliest rear extension) with a hipped roof at the west side, and a projecting C19 single storeyed wing at the east side. Part of the lower walls are of ironstone. Casements. The north gable, showing the massive chimney breast, contains the main entrance, with a C18 gabled hood on carved brackets, and a 6-panelled (2 top glazed) door. Inside, there is a Jacobean staircase with turned balusters, some walls with vertical boarded surface, two C18 fireplaces on each side of the central stack inserted within the hall c1600, having moulded cornices, architraves, and upper panels containing painted scenes.
