Description
STURMINSTER MARSHALL SY 99 NW CHARBOROUGH PARK 9/59 Lion Gate 18.3.55 - II Gateway. c1840. Stucco. A Roman arch; a symmetrical design with detached coupled columns in front of pilasters, set against a solid core, from which the arch springs, with keystone and impost band. The Ionic Order has simple bold mouldings, and each pair of plain columns stands on a single pedestal; the entablature supports a blocking course, broken above the columns and having a raised platform in the centre, with the figure of a lion. At each side of the structure is a flanking wall, with plain piers at each end. The gates (1862) are of cast iron, with elaborate ornament. The structure has the same form on its front (north east) and rear elevations. RCHM
