HIGH STREET 1. 5193 (west side) The Minster Church of St Cuthburga. (formerly listed as Collegiate Church of St Cuthburga (The Minster) SZ 0099 NE 2/58 14.6.52 GV 2.
Of Saxon origin the main fabric now of C12 and late medieval date. Considerable C19 restoration. An important collegiate church. Walls built of a mixture of limestone and a local ironstone. Most roofs of lead with parapets. North porch roof tiled, with stone eaves courses. Cruciform plan with nave, aisles, west tower, north and south porches, crossing with central tower, transepts, chancel with north and south aisles, vestry east of south transept - with low modern eastern extension. Crypt under eastern part of chancel - (the original Lady Chapel). Main part of nave, crossing and central tower, and west bay of chancel C12. Chancel and transepts rebuilt C13. Nave extended to west C14. West tower C15. Chancel aisles C14. Rebuilt C19. Low brick boundary wall to churchyard, with iron gates. For full description see RCHM Dorset Vol V (East).
