Description

1. 5186 HOLDENHURST VILLAGE Church of St John SZ 1295 33/40 5.5.52. B 2. Medieval parish included al1 Bournemouth CB (except Kinson and Talbot Village). Church rebuilt on new site 1834 by George Evans of Wimborne, Georgian Gothic but in stone, not stucco. Perpendicular style, 2-light nave and south transept windows. Hexagonal open bellcote with 4-centred arches, projecting from narrower base, pinnacles, central finial. Polygonal apse, gabled north-east vestry, and lean-to western narthex, all added by Benjamin Ferrey, 1873. Interior aisleless, heavy hammerbeam roof with traceried spandrels, plain arch to transept. Ferrey's apse roof has arched trusses. Gabled and pinnacled reredos of alabaster and pink marble with inlaid cross (style of Street); stained glass to lancets of CI3 medallion type. Chancel arch round-headed, on corbels. 2 window by Kempe (deaths 1898, 1907). Listing NGR: SZ1293195213
