20/192 Cricket Pavilion in Dean Park Sports Ground
II
Cricket Pavilion. 1902 for the Bournemouth Cricket and Lawn Tennis Club (photo), with late C20 alterations. Red brick in Flemish bond with tile-hung first floor to front; otherwise brick in stretcher bond. Plain tile roof. 2 storeys; 6 bays, 1:1:3:1, the 3 bays breaking forward, with single-storey bay set back on right. The 3 main bays which break forward have: ground floor glazed with small-pane upper section and central entrance; the first floor (balcony) open, having arcade with billeted arch braces to eaves plate above which is vertical boarding, and plain balustrade with central clock. Hipped oversalting roof with decorative ridge tiles and dragons' head finials, the roof sloping down as catslide roof over side bays. Right-hand side-bay has projecting polygonal corner; door and continuous glazing (with small-pane upper section) to ground floor and later C20 glazing to continuous first floor window. Left-hand side- bay has half-glazed double door, giving on to internal steps up to balcony and canted window above. Bay further left, originally single-storey but raised to 2 storeys under flat roof, has doorway with side lights and overlights. Bay set back to far right is an addition, not of special interest. Right return: main block has board door on right; to its left, adjoining the pavilion, is a wooden telephone kiosk, probably of 1920s, gabled with tall ridge-piece and pendant acorn finials. Interior: the balcony has tiered benches, and the wall- ing is of white brick in Flemish garden wall bond with red brick bands; fishbone king-post roof trusses. A well preserved and relatively early cricket pavilion. Reference: photograph hanging inside pavilion.
