Description

ST 71 SE STURMINSTER NEWTON WHITE LANE CLOSE (Off Bath Road) 8/10001 Bonslea House II House. Circa 1900. Stretcher bond red brick with stone dressings. Plain tile hipped roof with coved eaves, and lead flats. Brick axial stacks. PLAN: Principal rooms arranged around a central atrium, with service rooms to north, and colonnade to south garden front. Bedrooms in basement below with windows on the lower west side overlooking the River Stour. Ecclectic Italianate, Queen Anne and Jacobethan styles. EXTERIOR: 1 storey and basement. Asymmetrical east front with large square bay window to right with hipped roof, smaller canted bay window on left and elliptically arched doorway between with brick hoodmould; cross-mullion-transom windows; small timber-frame gable on left [SE] corner. South garden front has stone Tuscan 7-bay colonnade, bowed at centre, with balustrade above and trefoil balustrade between the columns; the ground level is lower on left and below the colonnade there is a rusticated stone arcade and flight of steps to lower garden level. On the left [SW] corner there is a 3-storey circular turret with stone mullion-transom windows with leaded panes and a lead tented roof; smaller roughcast turret for access to roof flat with similar tented roof, and large lantern to atrium. West side is two storeys, asymmetrical, centre recessed slightly and with large timber square oriel with ogee lead roof with deep coved eaves. INTERIOR: The large central atrium has thin cast-iron columns supporting the large glazed lantern with ornate curved iron girders/trusses and yellow stained glass to margin panes. Drawing room on SW corner has neo-Classical plaster ceiling, elaborate wooden fretwork screen and large chimneypiece. Room in SE corner has fretwork screen in bay window. Room on west side has large chimneypiece with oval mirror and flanking cupboards. Bedroom below in SW corner has chimneypiece with shelves and tiled iron grate/stove with hinged doors. Moulded panel doors and architraves, and moulded plaster ceiling cornices. Listing NGR: ST7845014482
