Description

ST 81 NW MARGARET MARSH 5/72 Church of St Margaret 16.8.60 GV II* Parish Church, C15 west tower, remainder rebuilt 1872. C19 work by Crickmay. Coursed squared rubble and ashlar with ashlar dressings. Tiled, gable-ended roofs, with stone copings. Plan: west tower, nave, chancel, south porch. West tower: 3-stages separated by weathered strings; diagonal buttresses to first 2 stages; embattled parapet; octagonal vice tower; 4-centred arch west door of 2 chamfered orders with label; 3-light, vertical tracery window under 2-centred head with string course carried over as label; 2-centred, 2-light bell-stage openings with lattice stone panels; south face has similar window in second stage; gargoyle to parapet string. Nave windows are 2-light with vertical tracery under 2-centred heads with returned labels. North and south chancel windows of 2-lights with flowing tracery. East window of 3-lights with vertical tracery under a 2-centred head with stopped label. Gabled south porch with 4-centred, plain chamfered arch. South door of a similar pattern. Internal features: early C14 round bowl font on C18 base. Some medieval glass reset in west-window. Other fittings and fixtures largely C19. RCHM, Dorset, vol IV, p 45/6, no 1.
