Description

ST 81 NW WEST ORCHARD WEST ORCHARD VILLAGE 5/176 Nos 18 and 19 23.12.77 GV II House, now 2 cottages, probably C15 refaced C18. Timber frame and brick with greensand ashlar plinth. Thatched roof half-hipped left and gabled right. Brick stacks to right gable and to left of door. 2 storeys, 4 window range. 3-light casements with leaded-lights except to upper floor over doors which has a similar 2-light casement. Right hand windows have diamond panes. Ground floor windows under segmental brick arches. Paired front doors. Internally the plan has three rooms with a cross-passage backing onto the stack. The building is of true-cruck construction with traces of soot-blackening. There is some plank and muntin partitioning. The hall appears to have had an internal jetty. The house appears to have originated as an open hall with ceiled solar and possibly an integral byre. At a later stage the hall was ceiled and a stack inserted. It was then refaced and converted into 2 cottages in the C18. Manuscript notes by P Cunnington, 1977. Listing NGR: ST8233616471
