Description

PULHAM ST 70 W 8/164 The Old Rectory 7.6.73 GV II* House, main block late C18, south-east part of main block early C19 and southern room mid C19. Rendered walls with hipped, slate roof behind embattled parapet. Various chimneys rising from behind ridge. In the 'Gothick' style on a Greek cross plan. South-east facade; symmetrical, 2 storeys and attic, 3 window range. Central bay slightly recessed. Ground floor has a central, canted, ashlar porch with a 2-centred doorway with a label and a glazed double-door. Sides have lancets. Flanking the porch are 2 3-light, stone windows, the central lights having 4-centred heads and the side lights having lancet lights. Labels over. Sashes with glazing bars. First floor has 3 sash windows with glazing bars under 4-centred heads with square labels. 2 bulls-eye attic windows. Cornice below parapet. Flanking the main block are 2 single storey with attic pavillions connected to the main block with wall having cross-shaped loops. These pavillions are of 2 bays having lancets with glazing bars in the form of Y tracery. Above is a string course broken by a bulls-eye window with an embattled parapet over. South-east facade in classical style. Internal features (RCHM); stone fireplace with 4-centred head; central compartment with circular ceiling supported on four pendentives and 4 elliptical arches with reeded soffits; south east room has circular plan with round headed recesses, doorways with moulded pilasters and a reeded marble fireplace.
