Anglican Parish Church. Possibly C12 origin. Tower and porch C15, rest of the church largely rebuilt in C16, incorporating material from Milton Abbey. Chancel restored and vestry built in C19. Walls mainly flint and stone banding; slate roofs with coped gables and parapets to aisles. Nave, north and south aisles of 3 bays, chancel with north and south chapels, west tower, south porch - projecting into aisle, vestry west of north aisle. Tower, ashlar stone, of 3 stages, with battlemented parapet, angle pinnacles and gargoyles. Square- set buttresses. Moulded string courses and plinth. 2-light traceried windows to belfry. West door with moulded pointed arch. Above this a large C15 mullioned and transomed window. Semi-octagonal stair turret on north. Remains of large buttress on south. Moulded parapets to aisles. Some carved corbels built into south aisle wall. West of porch, a square-headed 2-light window with ogee lights. East of porch, 2 C16 3-light square-headed windows with 4-centred lights. Date stones over these, 1569. Narrow arched doorway between windows. Over this a stone sundial dated 1690. Porch has moulded pointed-arched doorway with trefoiled niche over, and diagonal buttresses. East window of south chapel, late C15, traceried. East window of chancel C19, traceried. East window of north chapel C16, traceried. North wall of north aisle, reputedly from Milton Abbey, C15, re-set, of 6 bays with stepped buttresses capped by gargoyles. 4 centre bays have traceried window - 2 end bays with blank arches. C19 vestry west of aisle, of stone and flint.
Internally, porch has stone fan vault, with traceried panels and carved bosses. Chancel has C19 curved waggon roof. Segmental pointed arches to side chapels, with moulded caps. Remains of Rood stair south of chancel arch. Chancel arch segmental-pointed, with moulded caps. Nave arcades of slightly differing design, with segmental pointed arches, composite piers and moulded caps. Nave roof, hammer-beam, C19. Windows of north aisle wall have rere-arches with circular shafts and carved caps. Shallow pitched roofs to aisles, C16, with moulded beams and rafters. C15 tower arch with panelled soffit and jambs. Square C12 font with panelled sides on C19 base. In tower 2 C15 painted wood panels of 4 Apostles, from Milton Abbey. C19 Royal Arms - Victoria, on south aisle wall. Re-set carved stone panels in west wall of north aisle. Carved coat of arms, C17, in east wall of north chapel. Pulpit, of oak, made up of re-used C17 panelling. RCHM Monument 1. (Dorset. Vol.III)
