Listed Building: KNIGHTON MANOR (103276)

DURWESTON 6/179 CHURCH ROAD (east side) G.V. Knighton Manor II Detached house. Mid C18, early C19. Red brick to Cl8 block and flint with brick banding and details to large early C19 addition, brick stacks, slate roofs. The brick front block, facing Church Road, was a symmetrical steep-roofed structure with gable stacks, to which a bay was added, left, with kitchen in the C19; a large addition on the east side, with higher ceiling pitches, and hipped roofs returning towards the earlier unit gives an internal valley; entered from the south to long stair hall and through passage which separates the two parts of the plan. C18 front in Flemish bond, but return gable to right in Flemish garden wall, and incorporating some stone and flint at low level, possibly from an earlier building on the site; 2 storeys, attic, cellar, 4 windows, all glazing- bar casements. Two:3:3- lights at ground floor and 2:3:2:3- lights to first floor. Centred to original front a 6-panel part-glazed door to lead hood on brackets. 3-course plain string to this original 3.bay front. Left gable end has attached lean-to on four wood posts to stone bases, covering large Cl9 glazed door at end of through passage. Right gable has small 2-light casement to attic, then two 12-pane over one 12-pane sashes and gabled porch containing pair of 4-centre part-glazed doors in rubbed brick 4-centred arch. Main east front in 1:2 windows; at ground floor two large 5:15:5-pane tripartite sashes and a 12-pane, all to good wide-splayed brick flat arches, which are also under a second, smaller arch course. At first floor are three 12-pane sashes. Interior: the C18 block has transverse chamfered beams carried on console brackets and original panelled doors; the A-frame roof has heavy principals and two purlins. From first floor to attic is a tight square spiral stair. Later block has wide through hall with straight stick stair to cut string and scroll tread-ends. Two principal rooms have marble fire surrounds of pilastor and rosette form with thick marble mantel. Good panelled doors and working shutters.
