Listed Building: OX HOUSE (101980)

1. 1615 BIMPORT (North-West Side) No 13 (Ox House) (Formerly listed as No 13 Old Grove Place) ST 8522 6/25 20.6.52. II* 2. 2-storey stone ashlar house, probably late C16 to early C17. Recently restored. L-shaped. Gable-ends with stone copings. Plaintiles (recent) to roof. The front has a projecting 2-storey porch wing, the upper storey of which is plastered. The doorway is a modern reproduction, but the inner door has moulded stone jambs and a 4-centred arch. Windows have hollow- chamfered stone frames and mullions with later sashes inserted. Hood moulds to 1st floor windows, continuous weathermould above ground floor openings. 4-centre-arched doorway at rear. Paired chimneys of stone ashlar with moulded caps at each gable-end. Interior has moulded stud and panel partitions. Early C17 fireplaces. See RCHM. The house is the original of the 'Ox Inn" in Thomas Hardy's 'Jude the Obscure." Important for its internal features.
